H.I.P. offers a variety of Group Classes Workshops (descriptions below), and Private Lessons

Group classes are small, so everyone can get individual attention.

For dates, times and locations, go to the Class Schedule page.

Puppy/Adult Basics Class (8 weeks and older)
8-week class - $130
, Discounts

Whatever the age, this class is for your dog! Learn the standard commands plus how to set up your home environment in such a way that your dog will always know how to behave, not just when the leash is on or you are giving a specific command. Items covered include but are not limited to: Consistently walking on a loose leash (yes, even when distracted by squirrels, bikes and other dogs!), sit, down/stay (20-30 minute), come, accepting/enjoying handling, housebreaking, leaving people alone with they are eating, and being polite at the front door. PLUS learn how to fix behavior problems in older dogs and prevent behavior problems from ever developing in your sweet pup. Group classes are small, so everyone can get individual attention.

Clicker/Tricks Training (8 weeks and older)
6-week class - $110

Want to have fun and teach your dog cool tricks? Have a dog with lots of energy to burn? Or focusing/listening issues? Or confidence problems? Or aggression problems? Try Clicker Training!

Clicker Training, also called "Click&Treat"™ Training, is a type of training that uses a conditioned reinforcer, usually a cricket-like clicker, to mark a behavior that will be rewarded. When the behavior is completely formed and named, the clicker is removed. Then it's on to the next behavior! Work at your own pace to teach your dog to do just about anything s/he is physically and mentally capable of doing. General tricks we cover include: wave, high-five, crawl, say your prayers, play dead, roll over, and retrieving. Some clients have taught their dogs to "go shopping," "get the mail," give them a tissue when they sneeze, even retrieve beer from a cooler!

Try Clicker! (8 weeks and older)
2-week class - $40

For those who would like to know more about clicker training but are reluctant to sign up for a full course, the Try Clicker! gives you the basics of this type of training and gets you going on using it to teach your dog a couple of tricks. Owners come alone the first session to receive their clickers and practice before trying it with their dogs. The second session focuses on getting your dog to perform! Does not undermine or conflict with any other type of training. Watch out though — it can be addictive!

H.I.P. TRICKILITY (9 months and older) NEW!
6-week class - $110
One-day competition - $10/dog for two course runs

H.I.P. TRICKILITY — Tricks + Agility = A Whole New Way to Have a Whole Lot of Fun!

This is for people who want to exercise their dogs and have fun, but don't want the competitiveness or the big courses of standard agility. Created by H.I.P. owner Christy Paxton, TRICKILITY combines AGILITY with TRICKS. Dogs cover a smaller course with low-level obstacles and perform tricks between the obstacles. There are various difficulty levels ranging from easy (with obedience commands like Sit and Down as the tricks) to moderate (Roll over, Shake, etc.) to advanced (linked behaviors featuring multiple moves, for example, crawling and playing dead, pulling a wagon for a short distance, retrieving specific items and so on). Learn the basics in Level 1, and perfect your technique/add challenges in Level 2.

Dogs must not have any aggression issues. Clicker training is highly recommended but not required as a prerequisite.

Intermediate (CGC/Therapy Dog) class (7 months and older)
6 weeks - $110

After Basics, then what? More challenges, of course! This course emphasizes proper walking, greeting people politely, working while distracted and more. It also prepares you and your dog for the American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen test and for Therapy Dog (Delta Society) testing. The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test is a AKC certification program which proves to the world what a good dog you have! The Pet Partners test is given by the Delta Society, the most reputable of the therapy dog organizations. Dog/handler teams that pass this test can be allowed into hospitals and nursing homes. CGC test is given by instructor during the last class; students are given information for upcoming Delta Pet Partners test dates. All classes are 1 hour long. Cost is $110.

Registration required. Dogs must have completed Puppy/Adult Basics or have been evaluated by instructor.

Workshops

Workshops are targeted to those owners who have had some training experience already (e.g. have taken a basic obedience course or a set of private lessons) and are looking for more focused work in certain areas. Also, I'm happy to customize a workshop for your particular group -- ask me!

My current workshop offerings are:

The LeashWorkshop
One day, two hours - $50

Need to practice your leash skills but can't find the place to do it? Come to this one-day, two-hour workshop! You and your dog will be able to work in a controlled, secure, indoor environment where multiple distractions will be set up. Included are a basic skills review/troubleshooting session, plus walking past people distractions, object distractions and animal distractions. NOTE: If you have a dog that has shown any aggression (people or dog), you must talk to me before registering.

Solutions Workshop
One day, two hours - $40
Do you have a great dog that does a couple of things that just drive you crazy? Solve those problems at the Solutions Workshop. After an overview of the most common problems and ways to fix those, watch demonstrations with “guest dogs” and ask the questions pertinent to your dog in the Q&A section. It’s never too late to deal with issues and make your dog’s life better! DO NOT BRING YOUR DOG TO THIS WORKSHOP.

Aggression Workshop
One day, two hours - $50
Your lovable pooch turns into Cujo when he sees other dogs, or humans, or certain humans, or cats, etc. etc. Use this workshop to learn why he’s freaking out and how you can stop the blow-ups. This session includes an overview of what can create aggressive behavior and how owners inadvertently make the problem worse, plus the right ways and the right tools you need to banish this problem forever. DO NOT BRING YOUR DOG TO THIS WORKSHOP.

Behavioral Counseling/Private Lessons

Some owners are looking for one-on-one sessions for their dog because of scheduling difficulties or special circumstances, or because they have specific behavioral issues they need addressed. For those owners, I offer a variety of options.

  • A set of 6 private lessons at the client's home. These lessons cover everything taught in the group class but are custom-tailored to your dog(s). $500
  • A set of 6 private lessons at my facility. Again, these lessons cover everything taught in the group class but are custom-tailored to your dog(s). $350
  • A set of 3 private lessons at the client's home or at my facility . These lessons are for dogs who have been through basic obedience, either through H.I.P. or another training program, but still need help with behavioral and/or training issues. In-home: $250; in-facility: $175
  • Long-distance in-home option (Home & Phone): For those desiring 3 private lessons but who are beyond my normal coverage area (30 minutes from Middleburg Hts.), I offer an option consisting of one extended home visit (3 hours) followed by two 20- to 30-minute phone consultations. Clients may also submit videos (Mac-compatible only) for evaluation as part of the phone consultations. $225
